Nicknames Past and Present

I acquired a new nickname yesterday and it got me thinking about the various aliases for Monique.

Here’s the newest one:
M-ster

Others in rotation:
The Duck
Miss Mon
dm2

Nicknames of a by-gone era:
Nicky
Moni-Q (pronounced mawn-IQ)
Monickity
Mimi
Ta-Lilliput
Mico

What names do you go by?

You know what’s a little depressing? When I was in college, I was a lot thinner, so my nickname was ‘Stretch’. I guess that would be a stretch now…

Later, a startup I worked at pretty much required a ‘work name’ (huh?). As a preemptive strike, I chose my own. It was ‘The Dude’ (as in The Dude abides, from The Big Lebowski).

Now, to my niece Renata, I call her Nati-bo (as in the nickname of National Bohemian, a popular brand of beer in Baltimore, where I grew up), and she gets to call me Unkee-bo. Fair is fair.

I loved The Big Lebowski. In particular the bowling scenes.

Hmm, Stretch, The Dude and Unkee-bo. That is quite the list.

I have another nickname for your list: my name for you (at least when I write it) is Mq.

My most used nickname is Sio (pronounced “sigh-oh”, which I like, and not “see-oh”, which I do not like). This was actually given to me in grade 7 or 8 by one of the kinda-mean girls in my class.

Some of my other nicknames (past and present): Sigh-oh-be-haun, Siob ("Shiub"), Chevron, Chevvy, Vaunie, Mary Poppins, Kookenuk, Sho-Sho, Bon-Bon. For a time when I was 8, I was also called Truc (ie “thing-a-ma-jig” in French).

With a surname like ‘Wagstaff’ I’m sure you can appreciate how persecuted I was at school… ‘Wags’, ‘Waggy’, ‘Staff’ and ‘Shaft’ were the politer versions!

Anyway, nicer family nicknames include ‘Dannel’ (rhymes with ‘flannel’ ) and ‘DJ’ (them being my intials). I have a friend who always calls me ‘Danny-Boy’ and I get DTM (’Dan the Man’ ) in emails from a couple of friends… But I guess most people know me as just Dan which is a kinda boring abbreviation rather than a nickname…

Sio - I think ‘Truc’ is kind of cute. ; )

Hey Dan, don’t forget: your other nickname, as of last week, is Honey. wink

I’m a fan of Sio. I also like Mq and Wags.

James is fantastic at giving people nicknames but he seems to shimmy away from his own nicknames. I’ll let him post what they are though, I don’t want any new names allocated to my growing list--loose lips being the one to avoid.

Lol. How could I forget about ‘Honey’? I’m v. glad Freud wasn’t in that particular meeting.

Are you working on my ‘Honey’ business cards btw? Gold lettering, Vivaldi typeface and cream card right? I’m so classy…

I’ve always hated nicknames and abbreviations so people called me Mary-Anne. No nickname.
